How many Union Territories does India have?

8 Union Territories

India has a total of 8 Union Territories (UTs), which are directly governed by the Central Government. These UTs are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. Unlike states, most Union Territories do not have a legislature and are administered by an Administrator or Lieutenant Governor (LG) appointed by the President of India. However, Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu & Kashmir have their own legislative assemblies, allowing them limited self-governance. Union Territories play an important role in India’s governance, tourism, and strategic administration, with some being culturally and historically significant regions.
