How many states does India have?

28 states

India has a total of 28 states, each with its own government, legislature, and administrative framework. States have an elected Chief Minister (CM) and a Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) responsible for governance, policymaking, and law enforcement. Each state also has a Governor, appointed by the President of India, who acts as the constitutional head. States have full control over subjects listed in the State List and Concurrent List of the Indian Constitution, allowing them to make laws on matters like education, health, and agriculture. Unlike Union Territories, which are governed by the Central Government, states have greater autonomy in their administration. The largest state by area is Rajasthan, while the smallest is Goa.
