Union Territory without legislature
After the reorganization on October 31, 2019, Ladakh became a Union Territory without a legislature, following the revocation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir into two separate Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Unlike Jammu & Kashmir, which retains a Legislative Assembly, Ladakh is directly governed by the Lieutenant Governor (LG), appointed by the President of India. The Union Territory is administered by the Central Government, with no elected state government. Ladakh is known for its strategic importance, high-altitude terrain, and Buddhist cultural heritage, with key locations like Leh, Kargil, Pangong Lake, and Nubra Valley. The reorganization aimed to enhance governance, infrastructure, and development in the region.
