Union Territory with legislature
After the reorganization on October 31, 2019, Jammu & Kashmir became a Union Territory with a legislature, following the revocation of its special status under Article 370 on August 5, 2019. The former state was bifurcated into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Unlike Ladakh, which is a Union Territory without a legislature, Jammu & Kashmir retains a Legislative Assembly, allowing it to have an elected government with a Chief Minister. However, key areas like law and order, land, and police remain under the control of the Lieutenant Governor (LG), who is appointed by the President of India. This reorganization aimed to enhance governance, promote development, and integrate the region more closely with the rest of India.
