28 states and 8 Union Territories
After the reorganization in 2019-2020, India now has 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The changes began on October 31, 2019, when Jammu & Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, reducing the total number of states from 29 to 28 and increasing the number of Union Territories from 7 to 9. Later, on January 26, 2020, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged into a single Union Territory, bringing the total Union Territories down to 8. These changes were implemented to improve governance, administrative efficiency, and regional development.
