Article 370
Article 370 of the Indian Constitution was revoked on August 5, 2019, to change the special status of Jammu & Kashmir. This article previously granted autonomy to the state, allowing it to have its own constitution, flag, and decision-making powers, except in matters related to defense, foreign affairs, communications, and finance. Along with Article 370, Article 35A was also abrogated, which had given special rights to permanent residents of Jammu & Kashmir. Following this revocation, the state was bifurcated into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir (with a legislature) and Ladakh (without a legislature), effective October 31, 2019. This move aimed to integrate Jammu & Kashmir more closely with the rest of India, boost development, and improve governance.
