When was the special status of Jammu & Kashmir revoked?

August 5, 2019

The special status of Jammu & Kashmir under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution was revoked on August 5, 2019, by the Government of India. This historic decision removed the state’s autonomous status, making its laws and governance fully aligned with the Indian Constitution. Along with the abrogation of Article 370, Article 35A—which granted special rights and privileges to residents of Jammu & Kashmir—was also nullified. Following this, the state was bifurcated into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh—which came into effect on October 31, 2019. The move aimed to promote development, economic growth, and better integration of the region with the rest of India.
